Preparing the maternity suitcase
Packing your maternity suitcase is one of the last steps before meeting your baby! To help you navigate this moment with peace of mind, we've gathered the essentials (and a few thoughtful extras) here to make your departure stress-free. We've drawn inspiration from our own experiences and feedback from our Goodnvibes community to offer you an ultra-comprehensive checklist.
Our advice: start preparing it from the 36th week of pregnancy . It's better to be ready a little too early than to be caught off guard! In the meantime, you can start by discovering our ultimate guide to preparing the diaper bag , which will be a valuable help to you on a daily basis.
In the suitcase for you
Comfort above all! This is what you will need most to live this experience in the most gentle way possible.
-
The birth plan. Remember to print several copies: one for your records, one for the healthcare team, and one for you to keep in view. If you've highlighted the key points, even better!
-
Comfortable clothing. A cozy bathrobe, maternity leggings, loose-fitting outfits, or dark-colored pajamas will be your best friends. And if you plan to breastfeed, also include nursing tank tops and bras.
-
Toiletries. Hairbrush, shampoo (regular or dry), deodorant, toothpaste, lip balm... Also consider hair ties and facial wipes, a real treat when you don't have time to shower.
-
Easy-to-slip shoes. After giving birth, your feet may be swollen. You'll be glad you brought Crocs or flip-flops for easy, effortless movement.
-
An extra-long phone charger. The community's favorite tip! Bedroom outlets are often far from the bed. A long cable is essential to never run out of battery, especially for all those photos and video calls.
-
Maternity pads. While the hospital provides them, many parents find their own pads are more comfortable, being softer and more absorbent.
And for the little wonder?
Baby's suitcase is the cutest part. Here are the essentials for welcoming your little one.
-
The car seat. If you're driving home, this is a must. It should already be installed for the big day.
-
Outfits in all sizes. Pack a few outfits in newborn and 0-3 months. You never know if your baby will be big or small! Don't forget socks and hats.
-
Bottles and diapers. Some hospitals no longer provide these. Bring a small pack, along with cotton balls.
-
A little extra. If you plan to bottle-feed from birth, consider bringing two with you.
For the co-pilot
If you're traveling with someone, here's what your partner should pack to be ready to support you and feel comfortable.
-
Full of energy! Slip a reusable water bottle and snacks (savory, sweet, fruit, protein bars, etc.) into your bag.
-
Something to keep you busy. Headphones, a book, podcasts, or a laptop can be good allies during downtime.
-
A few comfort items. A light blanket or small pillow can make all the difference in a more comfortable night's sleep in a hospital room.
